A Mombasa businessman was on Tuesday arraigned in a Mombasa Court to answer to charges of importing contaband goods and forging import documents.
Mr Abdullah Roka Godana was accused of allegedly importing 2,450 bags of Brazilian sugar worth Sh9 million, concealed as dates.
The court heard that the accused mis-declared the Brazilian sugar as boxes of dates in five containers at the kilindini port.
The accused was also facing a second count of making false documents which were incorrect in particulars to be made by Midstar Forwarders company limited.
The accused who denied the charges before the court through his lawyer, Mr Jarred Magolo filed an application to be released on a reasonable bail term.
Lawyer Magolo in his application said that his client was entitled to bond or bail as stipulated in the constitution arguing that his client was not a flight risk.
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi granted the accused’s request and ordered for him to be released on a Sh500,000 bond and a surety of a similar amount or a cash bail of Sh300,000.
