A businessman charged with the murder of 60 people during the Mpeketoni attacks on Monday denied being involved in the killings.

Mr Mahadi Swaleh Mahadi, denied the charges before High Court Judge Martin Muya, saying he was not involved in killing anyone or financing the attacks.

He told the court he only heard of the attack through the media, adding that he never participated in the attack.

Mahadi was charged alongside Mr Diana Salim Suleiman for allegedly being behind the killing of 60 men and women on June 15, 2014 at Mpeketoni Township and Kaisari Village in Lamu County.

Mahadi was also accused of allegedly being in contact with the militants who carried out the attack and participated in the attack.

During the hearing, he denied the charges saying he does not have any means of funding the attacks, and has never been involved in military training.

“I was not involved in the attacks and when I was arrested, I was put in the cells without being booked,” he said.

The accused who also denied charges of being a member of the al-Shabaab militia group said he has not been shown any evidence of planning or financing the attack.

The investigating officer told the court last week that Mr Mahadi was positively identified by one of the witnesses as one of the attackers.
