Businessmen in Mount Longonot area are smiling all the way to the bank on hiring canes for hiking.

The cane, which go for Sh50, have become handy for hikers who use them for support while hiking.

Losing one of the canes, most of them made out of trees, costs Sh200, and are available at the entrance of the mountain. They are also well decorated with paint.

Hikers welcomed the initiative saying many were unable to get the sticks for use.

“Before, we used to get branches from for use. This was degrading to the environment and hence when they introduced the canes, it was a relief,” said Ann Njambi.

Njambi hailed the move saying it has come in handy when one was coming down the mountain

“It is often sloppy and slipperly and hence they are very good at supporting the hikers. They prevent us from falling down unlike before where one had to control movements using bare hands,” she added.

They were speaking to the press on Saturday where they challenged the businessmen to produce more permanent ones.

“We are hoping they can be able to sell them instead of hiring them," said Esther Njeri.
