A butcher was on Friday arrested in Kinoo, Kikuyu Sub County for allegedly selling donkey meat in his butchery.
Speaking after the arrest, Kikuyu Sub County Deputy Public Health Officer Ms Alice Kinuthia said that public health officers have been conducting regular inspections in the butcheries in different areas.
She said residents of the area complained over the butcher for selling meat that they suspected wasn't from a cow. Kinuthia said that the butcher was arrested today and in his butchery they recovered meat that they suspect was from a donkey.
She said that police from Kikuyu Police Station accompanied them to help in the arrest of the suspect.
"We have arrested the suspect and according to the information gathered so far, it is suspected that he has been operating for about 3 months," said Kinuthia. She noted that this was the 2nd suspect in a period of one month to be arrested on claims of selling donkey meat.
She warned residents against buying meat at butcheries that are not cleared by the public health office.
Kinuthia noted that all the inspection was to ensure hygiene was maintained adding that some butchers have well inspected meat but they are operating in unhygienic premises.
She noted that as the festive season approaches, some butchers are expanding their businesses by bringing in other meat such as chicken, sheep, goat and pig meat. She urged them to ensure the meat is inspected before selling.
