All stakeholders in Kisii County have been challenged to put in place mechanisms to educate the community on the effects of female genital mutilation and gender based violence.

Kisii County Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairlady Bathsheba Gesare Zanayo said a majority of women in society are have not been educated on the effects of FGM and other gender based violence.

She said most of the women are still subjecting their daughters to female genital violence without knowing its effects.

“There is need for stakeholders to put measures in place so that we can sensitise the public more so women on the effects of FGM so that we can end the practice,” said Zanayo

She spoke during the launch of the 16-day of activism campaign against gender-based violence on Wednesday at Kisii University and Kisii cultural hall.

She added that although they are in forefront in the fight against gender based violence in society, there is need for the community to be sensitised so that they too can join in the campaigns.

“We need to have an informed community so that we can all be able to fight such vices in society,” added the chairlady.

The 16 days of activism was official launched by Governor James Ongwae’s wife, Elizabeth aims to campaign against gender-based violence and leading the way to end violence against women.
