Nyamira Women Representative Alice Chae has challenged women to constitute women groups for easy access of help from the county leadership.
Speaking on Friday on phone with this writer over her plan for the women in the region, Chae said many women from the region were still naive about joining women groups making it difficult for them to get help.
She said it was cumbersome for women to be helped from individualistic perspective and urged them to consider joining existing groups or registering new ones for easy help.
“I am determined to help women but the challenge comes when they approach us from individualistic perspective. It becomes difficult because you cannot help all of them from that point. It’s now a challenge for them to form groups that we as leaders can help easily,” she said.
Chae who has faced criticism from a section of county residents over her performance defended the women representative seat and said they offered women an opportunity to have a say in matters governance and shunned those who were of the view that they should scrapped off from the constitution.
“Affirmative seats are important in any community especially communities that still suffer from male dominance (patriarchal). Through these seats, we are able to channel our views and issues affecting us with a lot of ease so it will be suicidal if they are scrapped from the constitution,” she added.
She said women representatives could now be able to execute their mandate without difficulties after Parliament adopted a kitty that will support their activities at the county level in 2015/16 budget.
“Initially, we could not be able to perform well because we had no kitty like MPs that we could use to help our people. I am now happy that we have one in place and that is why I am advocating for women to form or join groups that we can help easily,” she said.
