The youth in Githurai area of Kiambu County have been urged to shun crime and instead take part in activities that will add values to their lives.
Speaking at Mwihoko Shopping Centre in Githurai on Thursday, Kiambu County National Alliance (TNA) party coordinator Gladys Chania told the youth to stay off crime and to actively look for employment opportunities.
Chania also asked the youth in the area to stay off people who might want to recruit them or use them to commit crime.
She said that many young people are vulnerable and could be easily lured into crime. The TNA coordinator asked them to get involved in development activities being initiated by their leaders.
“Young people are the most vulnerable to social evils and this is because of the rising unemployment rates,” she said.
The TNA coordinator told youths to seek the support of their leaders and also take part in empowerment programmes.
She said the lack of job opportunities has seen a rise in crime and drug abuse in Kiambu County. The TNA coordinator who is also anti-drugs activist appealed to young people to shun drug abuse.
Chania said that she is working with various youth groups in the county to empower youths against drug abuse.
She called on the law enforcers and leaders to revive the fight against illicit brews and sale of second generation alcoholic drinks which she said had resurfaced in some parts of the county.
