Leaders from Kisumu have called on the national government to allocate more money for education in counties.
The leaders among them Kisumu Women representative Rose Nyamunga, County Executive Committee member for Education Jennifer Kerre and Kisumu West MP John Olago Aluoch said there was need for more funds to come to counties to support needy and bright students.
Only the Early Childhood Development Education was devolved while the primary, secondary and tertiary was retained at the national government.
The leaders were speaking during the launch of Equity Bank’s wings to fly initiative that awards children scholarships on Friday.
“As women representatives, we never used to get funds to help our constituents but currently we have a little which I will use to support needy children. But the government needs to add us more cash to support even many children,” said Nyamunga.
Kerre said currently the national government allocation can only manage to support few of the needy children while some are forced to drop out of school for lack of school fees.
She said such initiatives like Wings to Fly should be encouraged as it bridges the gap left by Constituency Development Fund and Ward Bursary Funds.
