An assistant chief in Kitutu Masaba has received backing from a section of leaders barely a few days after imposing a Sh500 fine on drunkards.

Sambu Bosire of Riamoni sub-location had insisted the measures to tame people absconding duty to drink before the stipulated time will help the area recover economically.

On Monday, the administrator’s decision that had elicited opposition from a section of locals received a timely backing from Gesima MCA Ken Atuti and other leaders from the region.

“If it means that people will have to pay a fine and stop violating the law, then there is nothing wrong with that. We need our people to engage in economic activities rather than using their time in drinking during the forbidden time,” Atuti said.

His sentiments were supported by Nyansiongo Ward counterpart Jackson Mogusu who urged the government to empower local administrators to effectively deal with errant bar owners.

“I think the government should empower local administrators to tackle powerful business people operating bars selling liquor to people before the required time. Even if it means revoking their license, that will be welcome but it’s important for those who also drink against the law to get fined. We want a productive population,” he said.

Sambu caused a stir last week in the sub-location after imposing the fine and a further said that culprits will be reporting daily to his office to be assigned other duties.
