Chiefs and their assistants shielding illicit brewers in Nyamira have been warned they risk being fired by the area deputy county commissioner.

Speaking in Bosamaro ward on Friday, Mr Thomas Saka said his office will pursue the administrators who have been linked in the past with receiving bribes to legitimise the business.

Mr Saka urged residents to work hand in hand with the county commissioner’s office to ensure the culprits faces full force of the law.

“The office of county commissioner is determined to have illicit brewing combated completely. This will only happen if the administrators respect the rule of law and execute their responsibilities by arresting those engaging in the business. My office will not tolerate administrators who collaborate with illicit brewers and we want our people to report such cases,” he said.

He said the brewers were detrimental to the economy of the region and challenged residents to seek alternative means of empowering themselves economically than promoting illicit brewing.

“Chiefs have a responsibility to arrest those responsible for illicit brewing. They have to execute crackdowns impartially and as their leaders, we will not hesitate to sack those who reportedly protect the suspects. It's high time people engage in other economically viable activities than embracing brewing,” he said.

He urged the administrators to work hand in hand with the police to ensure the menace is completely combated for the sake of future generation.

“We have the ability to combat these menace because our chiefs are fully equipped. It’s high time they work with police to ensure the notorious brewers are arraigned in court. They have to do their job or risk losing it for people who are serious,” he said when meeting retired chiefs in the region.
