Child abuse has been blamed for the declining education standards in Nyamira North Sub County.
Defilement cases that have become rampant in the region have been blamed for learners’ absenteeism and subsequent poor performance in national exams witnessed in the last three years.
According to area Education Officer Darius Matara, in the past one year, there have been over 20 cases of defilement of school going children, and he said that the government will put in place strict measure to ensure the acts are controlled.
He issued the warning on Thursday while addressing a stakeholders’ consultative forum at his boardroom, where he called on them to pool resources towards child protection.
“Sensitise the public on the right procedures of addressing defilement cases, where the defiled child should be advised not to take a shower before the case is reported to police and taken to hospital for examination and treatment among other things,” he said.
He said that despite of their current fight against child abuse, there have been constant cases and called upon parents and other education stakeholders to be in the forefront in the fight against.
