Kaptembwa chief Stephen  Koech has praised the role being undertaken by the community health workers in reducing child mortality.

Speaking on Monday at Kaptembwa the chief's camp  during a public meeting, Koech said there has been a significant reduction of child mortality owing to the efforts by the community health workers.

"We have witnessed a drastic reduction in child mortality and the trend is encouraging," said Koech.

However, the chief said that much more needs to be done to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDG) to accelerate child survival.

"There is more to be done in line with the government's effort in reducing child mortality and in line with the attainment of the MDG target," said Koech.

He also advocated for integrated management of childhood illnesses which includes immunisation to help reduce further child mortality.

"The government should  enhance  primary health interventions in reducing child mortality like increase in immunisation exercises", said Koech

He urged the community health workers to  continue to strengthening immunisation activities throughout the informal settlement.

Koech noted that more women are opting to deliver in the hospital saying this will go a long way to help in the reduction of infants deaths.
