Children with cleft lip and palate deformities from Kisii County are set to benefit from a one week free reconstructive surgery camp at the Kisii Referral Hospital.

The medical camp which targets over 100 children has been organised by the Kenya Progressive Nurses Association (KEPNA) in conjunction with the County Government of Kisii.

By Wednesday, which was the third day of the camp, 25 children had been booked for surgery. The association and county officials urged parents with children with such deformities to take advantage of the free treatment.

KEPNA National Chairman, Thaddeus Mayaka urged parents of children with the deformities not to hide them, but seek treatment early enough to avoid complications such as speech impairment.

He said failure to correct these congenital deformities could also stigmatise the children who have an opportunity of leading normal lives.

He said this was an initiative they will keep up, adding that they will engage community health workers to sensitise parents with such children on the need to have them attended.
