More than 100 church attendants were robbed by a gang near Holy Cross church in Shabab after the New Year night vigil.

The church attendants claimed they were attacked by a gang of more than ten people who waylaid them at the corner of the church.

They were allegedly robbed of cash, jewellery and mobile phones.

“The gang was armed with pangas and knives and they waited for us past midnight. We were walking from church when they attacked us from behind and beat us up before taking all our money,” said Francis Muchemi who was being attended to at a local dispensary.

He added that the gang, which hid at all the dark spots in the area was targeting residents who lived in Kaptembwa and Nakuru West.

Mercy Wairimu who was also treated for minor injuries said they attempted to call the police but to no avail.

Humprey Muchemi was also treated for minor injuries at the dispensary

“They used a knife to pierce me on my hands and face,” he added

“The gang took more than two hours there and harassed people even to an extent of making them lie down. Even after seeking help from the police, they didn't show up,” she said.

Nakuru West youth Leader Hamisi Ngutu has accused the police of laxity.

“We cannot understand how a gang of ten which was armed could not be arrested by police who were well armed,” he added.
