The Evangelical Church Alliance has called on the national government to reduce the number of counties to tame the increasing wage bill.
In a meeting at a Naivasha hotel on Thursday, the leaders called on governors to sack corrupt officials arguing that the vice is steadily taking root in counties.
Led by the alliance's chairperson Bishop Mark Kariuki of Deliverance Church of Kenya, the clerics condemned different malpractices at the county level, expressing fear that the nation might fail miserably in achieving the devolution purpose.
"We call on the President to liaise with governors so that corrupt public servants who misuse public offices are named and shamed," the bishop noted.
The leaders cautioned that if nothing was done, a major crisis was in the offing.
"What are we telling the future generations? Its like we devolved the problem bringing it down to the grassroots," he added.
The Naivasha meeting brought together more than 20 church leaders who vowed to spearhead peaceful co-existence in their respective counties.
