The co-operative societies' managements in Kisii County have been challenged to consider incorporating women in their leadership structures to ensure there is gender equity in their boards of management as part of implementation of the constitutional gender equity principle.
Wakenya Pamoja Sacco Society Chairman of the Board of Directors, Nelson Simba has challenged all co-operative societies' leaderships in the Gusii region to embrace women while constituting the boards of managements as part of efforts to incorporate women in decision-making processes affecting them in the society.
Speaking to this writer in his office in Kisii town on Wednesday morning, Simba regretted that the retrogressive culture of isolating women from leadership and decision-making processes affecting them had contributed to gender inequality in leadership structures in the co-operative movement.
Simba said initiating women into co-operative movements was a critical decision that should be embraced by all co-operative societies in the Gusii region to give women a chance to articulate issues affecting the women folk in the region.
"As co-operative movement leaders, we advocate for inclusive spirit of co-operators by ensuring both men and women have equal chances and opportunities to participate in the running of co-operative institutions in the country," stated Simba.
