A section of Nyamira leaders have organised transportation system targeting universities and college students from Kisii town and its environs as mass voter registration comes to a conclusion.

On Saturday, Gesima MCA Ken Atuti and his Rigoma counterpart managed to assist over 100 students living in Kisii town by providing transportation to their rural areas for registration ahead of Monday’s dateline.

The two leaders praised the cooperation of students and urged others to respond in the final two days of the registration exercise.

“Registration of our people as voters is important. College students are neglected because many of them are unable to afford transport home and that is why we came with the idea. We have seen a good number turning up and we expect that the trend will continue in the final two days,” Atuti said.

Sironga on his part revealed that the county government of Nyamira had hired several other buses which are expected to transport college students from the county undertaking their education in Western region and South Rift.

“The county assembly collaborated with the executive to secure buses that are expected to transport our children studying in Western region colleges and South Rift this Sunday and Monday. We have reached student leaders and everything is in place,” he said.

Atuti challenged IEBC to consider scheduling next year’s mass voter registration exercise during holidays to attract more voters.

“As a county we want to register as many people as we can but that can happen if IEBC schedules next year’s final mass registration excise during holidays so that the young people are reached. Many of them do not know that they can register where they live and details reflect their preferred stations,” he said.
