Nyamira County Assembly committee chairpersons have been urged to reduce the number of sittings to cut down expenditure.

Assembly committees are allowed to have a maximum of four sittings per week.

County Speaker Joash Nyamoko on Thursday during a meeting with a section of youths from the county slammed committee chairs for regularly asking for more time to conclude matters and urged them to ‘get committed’ and save taxpayers' money.

“I know how the MCAs work so hard to fulfill certain tasks in time but I want to urge the chairmen to squeeze their busy schedule and make sessions as stipulated in the law. Calling for more sessions cannot really help us have a positive impact on our people at the ground because they want services,” he said.

Nyamoko said the move will reduce the expenditure of the County Assembly and boost its oversight role.

“Of course we need these sessions but some issues can even be solved in not more than two sittings. Therefore, let us try as possible to minimise these sessions when we have the time to do the work expeditiously. This will boost our oversight role by doing away with unnecessary expenditures,” he said.

He however challenged MCAs sitting in various committees not to use the directive as an excuse of doing shoddy work.

“We must also ensure we come up with tangible, well founded investigations at committee level. It’s not the number of sessions that matter but the quality of the work you done, even in an hour,” he said.
