A community health volunteer working with the Kenya Red Cross has voiced his concern over poor sanitation in Kibera.

Speaking to this writer on Wednesday at Ayany, Edwin Ochich said residents need to improve environmental hygiene in the slum to avoid outbreak of diseases.

“We have been carrying out a research on the state of Kibera in terms of cleanliness and we found out that these people are not doing much to clean their environment,” said Ochich.

He appealed to the residents to take it as a challenge and ensure their arease are clean to prevent getting diseases such as cholera.

“It is considered a habit by Kenyans to be throwing litter everywhere even where there is a dust bin near. This behavior must stop because it casts us in bad light. Kibera is even worse since the litter accumulates in sewages causing blockages. This is dangerous to residents health because the blocked sewages attract flies which spread diseases,” he added.

Ochich said the areas which need to be cleaned are some parts of Olympic, Mashimoni and Karanja.
