The county government of Nyamira has been urged to improve drainage system of Keroka Township due to its negative impact on residents when it rains.

This comes a day after flush floods caused destruction worth thousands of shillings apart from paralyzing business activities in the busy border town.

Speaking to this reporter on Thursday, a group of business people led by Ezekiel Machuka blamed the county government for deliberately ignoring the town despite being one of the leading in terms of revenue collection.

“The county government collects over 30% of its revenue from this town and in return, we haven’t seen concrete projects. For instance on Wednesday, flash floods caused destructions worth thousands of shillings due to poor drainage of the town. On behalf of this people, we would like to appeal to the county government to improve the drainage system to combat such eventualities in future,” he said.

Mr Machuka said the poor drainage system was also likely to cause a myriad of diseases to residents among them cholera and typhoid and called for immediate action from the John Nyagarama led government.

“It’s not just sweeping away our properties and what have you. Poor drainage is perilous when it comes to sanitation and people are likely to contract dangerous diseases such as cholera which may lead to the county incurring a lot of money in victim treatment. It will be therefore advisable for them to be proactive and fix the drainage system,” he added.
