Speaking in his office on Wednesday, the acting director for fishing Cosmas Lagat said the program is meant to educate farmers on the importance of rearing fish for export.

"Uasin Gishu County has the potential to provide fish for export since most of its lands are swampy and it only needs small capital to start," he said.

He said that farmers will be educated on how to go about fish farming free of charge, and that the exercise will be carried out in all wards.

"We have partnered with the University of Eldoret to produce high quality fingerlings that will be given to farmers free of charge for them to start fish farming," he said.

He said the county has high demand of fish where it imports over two tonnes of fish from Uganda.

"We want our farmers to benefit from the ready market which has not been exploited and importation of fish will be a thing of the past since we will produce our own," he said.

He also said that the program is also meant to ask farmers to join cooperatives for them to benefit from the loans given to farmers to improve their livelihood.
