The county government of Nyamira has yet again come under criticism over an abandoned project that was initiated over a year ago.
The toilet construction project at Nyaramba Market kicked off in 2014 and has since stalled without concrete explanation by the county government.
This has attracted fierce criticism by a section of area residents, who on Friday demanded that the county government looks into the issue as soon as possible.
They threatened to incite those using the market to boycott remitting taxes to the county government until the situation is amicably solved.
“It’s really shameful that a county government can launch a very small project like this and take over a year to complete it. We demand that the county responds swiftly before we think of boycotting remitting of taxes,” said Peter Mayaka who chairs market the traders organisation.
They said the market committee had tried to reach the county leadership with no fruit and hinted that the project could have been used by corrupt individuals to swindle money from the county government.
“As a committee, we have tried our best to get answers from the county government but we have been unsuccessful. We suspect that the kings of corruption may have used the project to defraud county government millions of shillings,” he added.
They gave the county government two weeks to give a detailed report on the project before they make their threat real.
“We cannot be dismissed, we want to see the project revived because the market is exposed to dangers of cholera. Any public market must have enough toilets and we are giving the county government two weeks to revisit the project and possibly revive it before we do what is best for us,” said Kevin Onsomu, a committee member.
