A Mombasa businessman has urged the county government to educate women and youth on how to benefit from the 30 per cent tenders set aside by the national government.
Speaking in Changamwe on Thursday when he gave Sh250,000 to women groups, Mr Peterson Mitau, who is also a Mombasa politician, said inadequate information on tendering is the main reason women and youth rarely benefit from the 30 per cent tenders reserved for them.
Mr Mitau said the public lacks information on the availability of government tenders and faulted the political leadership in Changamwe for failing in civic education.
The problems the youth and women are faced with include lack of training and sensitisation on the process of registering companies and business names, as well as getting the right documentation and bidding for tenders as required by law.
“Many youth and women do not understand the basic requirements for the tendering process. The county government should educate the residents on public procurement so that the residents can have knowledge on the available services and opportunities,” said Mr Mitau.
Mr Mitau added that it was unfair for some of the leaders to keep the residents in the dark concerning tenders so that only people close to them can benefit.
“We do not need such leaders who instead of uplifting people’s livelihoods, only want those close to them to benefit from the lucrative government tenders,” he said.
