Health officials have been warned against engaging in drug theft.

According to a report prepared and tabled before the County Assembly, Assembly’s Health Committee Chairperson Ken Atuti, many health centres were undergoing severe shortages despite the county putting efforts to combat drug shortages.

Speaking on Thursday at Nyaiguta health center, Chief Health Officer Dr Douglas Bosire said the county government will carry out an audit and bring to book those involved in drug theft.

“I want to assure you that the county has purchased enough drugs and I am shocked that some health centres are battling shortage. We are on the verge of carrying out an audit and bring to book those who are perpetrating daylight theft,” he said.

He also hinted of a possible crackdown on chemists allegedly owned by health workers and arrest those who may be found in possession of drugs purchased by the county government.

“We are not going to tolerate instances that people use their power to deprive citizens that right to affordable health. We know those who own chemists around and use the government drugs for their commercial gain. It is better they surrender before we catch up with them. The health committee report from the assembly must be implemented and we are ready as government,” he said.

He urged residents to be vigilant and report cases of drug theft.
