Kisii Governor James Ongwae's wife, Elizabeth Ongwae has called on Kisii County residents to go for early cancer check up as a way of fighting the disease.

“I call upon and encourage people to go for early cancer screening as one way to fight cancer. 70 per cent of cancer patients seek medication late making its management hard,” she said.

She was speaking during a cancer campaign and women empowerment event on Friday at Kisii University main campus.

She thanked Kisii University for hosting the event which will kick start the fight against cancer.

She raised concerns over the increased cases of cancer in the country as it is the third killer disease.

She further added that three people die of cancer every hour and this should serve as a wake up call to everyone.

She encouraged such campaigns as they will strengthen efforts in war against cancer.

In addition, she called upon Kisii residents to change lifestyles especially eating nutritious and balanced foods, exercise and regular checkups which will help prevent cancer cases.

“I encourage our people to change lifestyle, go for regular check ups and check on excess weight,” she added.

She further said that she has strategic plans for the widowed in the society and the vulnerable.

She said she has launched table banking projects which will in the long run help widows.
