Counties in Nyanza region have been asked to take Early Childhood Education seriously to improve education standards in the country.
Ahadi Kenya Trust Chief Executive Officer Dr Stanley Kamau said counties have ignored ECD infrastructure despite being devolved functions.
Kamau asked teachers and parents to support ECD programmes.
He said it forms the foundation of nurturing and developing children.
Speaking at Nyamrundu Primary School in Nyando on Friday where he distributed shoes to pupils, Kamau decried poor ECDs infrastructure in public schools.
He said it was unfortunate that the early childhood education sector in the country is still using muddy and dusty floors hence compromising on the education standards.
Kamau challenged governors to allocate sufficient funds to help build modern ECDs in public schools.
“Devolution had placed ECD and vocational institutions under counties and therefore governors must wisely spend the funds intended projects,” he said.
He added that more ECD centres should be built each year to meet the country's demands.
“The county government must encourage residents to take education seriously by putting sufficient infrastructures in place,” he said.
He also asked residents to oversight development projects awarded by the county government to curb graft.
He said reports have indicated that contractors collude with school management committees to steal money disbursed for development projects.
Kamau said this has compromised quality and standards of service.
He added that involvement of residents in project management will ensure transparency and accountability.
The Ahadi boss distributed more than 10,000 pairs of shoes and slippers to pupils in five primary schools in Nyando and Kisumu East sub-counties.
