A family accused of brewing illicit liquor from Otongolo has been arraigned before a Kisumu chief magistrate court.
Stephen Ochieng and his wife Priscah Auma faced the charges of allegedly brewing and selling illicit liquor and operating a business without a licence.
They, however, denied both charges.
The prosecution applied that the two be remanded for two more days to enable them do a complete search at the accused home as it is believed that there are still more brewing sites hidden within the compound.
Kisumu chief magistrate Thomas Obutu granted the prosecution their request but only allowed the couple to be remanded for two days.
“I have received the application, but it should be clear that no accused person is under obligation to help the prosecution in the investigation, I therefore remand the two for two days,” said Obutu.
However, the accused pleaded with the court to grant them bail as they had a young family to support, but their request was turned down.
"If there is any illicit liquor brewing business in my home, am not part of it. I, therefore, should be left out," Auma told the court in her defense.
“I am the head of the family and any wrongdoing is under my name, so my wife should be set free to take care of our children," agreed Ochieng.
