Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has reassured traders of Daraja Mbili open air market that his government is working towards improving its state.

Speaking at the market on Tuesday while assessing the damage caused by the ongoing El-Nino rains, Ongwae said his government in collaboration with the national government will construct a modern market and improve the drainage system to avert similar incidents.

“On October 24th this year, the county government invited bids from eligible contractors in local dailies for the completion of Daraja Mbili market and construction of storm water drainage and associated works. As a temporary measure a number of youth groups will be hired to unblock the drainage system and contain clogging,” said Ongwae.

The Daraja Mbili market traders incurred huge losses on Monday evening after the rains washed away their wares when Rivers Riyabe and Nyakomisaro burst their banks.

Footbridges at the market were swept away and drains blocked causing the heavy flooding.

The governor indicated that his administration is constructing a total of seven bridges along River Nyakomisaro adding that roads in the area will also be improved.
