Nakuru Chief of Health Samuel Mwaura has hit out at people who discriminate persons living with HIV and Aids, terming them as fools.
Mwaura, who was speaking on Tuesday at Nyayo Gardens during celebrations to mark the World Aids Day, pointed out that the county had made strides towards zero discrimination of persons living with HIV.
“If you have ever discriminated at anyone because of their HIV status, look at the person next to you and tell them 'Mimi ni Mjinga'," said Mwaura.
According to Mwaura, such persons required love and care and discrimination against them was not wise.
“We have over 66,000 persons living with HIV in Nakuru county and one cannot afford to treat them harshly because of their status,” he added.
Mwaura, however, challenged them to take ARV drugs saying that only 50 percent of them were taking the drugs.
“Cuba is the only country in the world with zero new infections and zero maternal infection cases of ARV. The main reason is because many have taken the initiative to know their status and take the needed care,” he added.
Mwaura appealed to residents to know the status of their partners.
“I am encouraging everyone to have a test conducted and determine their HIV status," he added.
