Thika nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Florence Njeri Ngeru has appealed to the community to accept reformed inmates who are released back to the society.

Speaking at the Thika Main Prison on Saturday, the nominated MCA observed that some members of the society were unwilling to accept reformed inmates.

She stated that most reformed inmates who are integrated back in the society experience discrimination.

“We are urging members of the society not to discriminate against reformed inmates and instead should help them start again in their lives,” she said.

The nominated MCA said that reformed inmates have been trained and can be meaningful to the society if given a chance.

Speaking at the same event, Thika Prisons Officer In charge Samuel Kunzu said that the government has put in place various mechanism aimed at empowering inmates.

The officer in charge also said the government is working on expanding facilities at the prison. He said that improve facilities will ensure that the inmates access required help during their stay in prison.

Kunzu said that prisons are not condemnation centers but places where people are counseled and nurtured to behave rightly.
