Rongai police boss Joseph Mwamburi has accused a section of leaders from the sub-county of politicising the El Nino threat saying residents were prone to the real threat as the said politicians live in safer and protected grounds.

Speaking during a chief’s baraza in Riobei on Monday, the OCPD expressed concern over the sluggish manner in which residents were responding to the El Nino threat after being assured of compensation by some of their leaders.

“Why should a straight thinking leader tell his people to wait until something bad happens before coming in to help in the name of making himself popular?” wondered Mwamburi.

He was concerned that Lake Solai had burst its banks a week ago but the residents still saw no harm in vacating, with a majority saying that there was enough money for them if the worst happens.

Mwamburi further cautioned the residents against being misused by politicians arguing that this was an emergency that needed immediate action, not politics.

“Be warned that some leaders will seize any available opportunity to mislead the masses for political gains. Let’s not be cheated, El Nino is real and if you don’t take precautionary measures, you will be caught unawares,” he advised.

Lake Solai burst its banks last week but residents have been reluctant to move to safer grounds after they were promised compensation by some leaders who claimed the county government had allocated enough funds to compensate people who will be displaced by the heavy rains.
