A 27-year-old driver was on Thursday arraigned before a Kisumu law court to face charges of stealing cooking oil worth Sh120,000.

Mwangi Gregory denied the charges before Kisumu chief magistrate Esther Maina for the offence allegedly committed on October 14 this year. 

According to the prosecution, Mwangi was tasked with transporting the oil from a hardware in Kisumu. The oil from a hardware located in Kibos was to be transported to a retail shop located in Otongolo, within Kisumu County. 

It is alleged that Mwangi, along the way made a stop over where he offloaded the oil to another truck which headed to Kisumu town. 

He is said to have made a police report, where he told the police that he was stopped by thugs at gun point where they forced him to open the truck transporting the oil, where the alleged thugs took the oil. 

Investigations were immediately launched where it was discovered that the accused played a role in disappearance of the goods, the court heard. 

Mwangi was arrested on October 25 as the main suspect. He was released on a cash bail of sh25,000. 

The case will resume on January 13, 2016.
