Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers have arrested a police officer along with a taxi driver, who demanded sh300,000 bribe in Nakuru after they detained a sh1.9 million worth of gold in Busia.

The officer, Fredrick Shariff, who is attached to Busia, detained the gold property that was being transported at the Kenya-Uganda border and demanded a sh300,000 bribe for its release.

The EACC officers were tipped off by the complainant and they set a trap in a Nakuru hotel where they had agreed to give the officer the demanded amount. Speaking to the press at the EACC South Rift regional office in Nakuru, Deputy Director, Gilbert Lukhoba, said that the complainants reported the incident at their offices.

''The complainants are two Kenyans who were transporting their gold products and the officer detained the product at the Busia border. He later demanded sh300,000 as a bribe from them,'' he said.

The officer allegedly hired the taxi from Busia so that he could come and collect the money in Nakuru.

Lukhoba also said that the commission cannot comment on the situation that led to the detention and origin of the gold but the investigations are on going.

He said the officer and the taxi driver will soon be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations and consent from the office of the director of public prosecutions.
