Environmentalists have raised concern over  cases of poachers using snares to trap animals in Nakuru County.

They added that many are using the snares to trap animals for domestic and commercial purposes.

Among the animals targeted are giraffes, buffaloes and zebras.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, environmentalist Amos Chege called for more community awareness on the effects the snares have on wildlife.

“The animals mostly get serious wounds on the neck and legs, and we have to rely on the Kenya Wildlife Service to come and help in the treatment process,” he added.

According to Chege, there should be increased awareness to the local communities on the effects of feeding on game meat such as diseases.

“We also need frequent desnaring and prosecuting the ones found snaring or enacting the new Wildlife Act. This is the only way to stop the poachers,” he added.

Emily Mwangi called for more patrols in the conservancies.

“I would propose the hanging of poachers instead of jailing them for years. They are causing total ruin to our conservancies and they are interfering with our national heritage. Putting snares shows an inhumane way of dealing with the animals and in fact there should be harsher punishment for them,” she added
