Farmers in Esinse ward, Borabu constituency have appealed to the agriculture institute for soil testing and sampling to ascertain the causes of low maize production.

According to the farmers, the performance of the crop is poor leading to great losses.

They have appealed to the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute to conduct soil tests in the area to identify the reasons for the poor output and address them.

Speaking to this writer on Wednesday at Riamogambi area, the farmers led by Jackline Mokua and James Omache said the maize crop currently is not giving them better returns due to poor harvests.

They have also asked Kari to guide them on good farming techniques after the soil has tested.

James Mokua said despite the area being endowed with favourable rains and fertile soil, farmers are abandoning it due to low yields and returns.

“Most of us we have been depending on maize crop but now we have no produce from the shamba we ask for the soil be tested as one way of overcoming the challenge that we are experiencing if the soil found with uncontrollable disease them we get advised what kind of crop to plant,” said Mokua.
