A recent conversation with a colleague revealed something I had never known.
That anyone visiting Kisumu for the first time has the desire to order for a fish delicacy on arrival at the lakeside town.
But how many of the visitors to the town get to pop into a restaurant and order for the meal?
Visitors arriving to Kisumu with the wish to indulge in a fish meal will quickly realise that the delicacy is more expensive in the town than other towns.
But why would one buy the delicacy more expensively in the town yet Lake Victoria from which the fish is harvested from is just a stone throw away?
Fish traders say business has taken a new twist with as many as five middlemen cashing in between fishermen and the actual consumers of the fish.
The middlemen transport the fish caught to markets outside the lake region causing a severe shortage that results in high market prices for the product.
