Kamenu ward rep Mary Husseini has appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta not to assent to the Excise Duty Bill 2015 passed by the National Assembly recently.
Hussein who spoke in Makongeni shopping centre on Tuesday said the Bill will affect many unemployed youths negatively who are trying to eke out a living amid tough economic times.
"That Bill passed by our parliamentarians was done in total disregard of the economic situation on the ground and not many Kenyans are happy with it. We request our President not to assent to it with the controversial clauses unchanged," said Hussein.
The MCA noted that many youths who depend on the boda boda business in her ward might be headed downstream if the Bill becomes law.
"The Bill will see every imported motorcycle taxed Sh10,000 more. Where do our youths get this money from if we've been lobbying for the current price to be reduced further?" she asked.
Hussein warned that the Bill will compound the problems of unemployment and drug abuse among youths saying it will kill the boda boda sector and taxi business.
