Masaba KNUT branch has written to all school heads, Ministry of education and TSC to allow its members who hail from distant regions an ultimatum of at least one week before joining the rest when schools reopen after holidays.

Speaking on Sunday at Rigoma Catholic Church, Deputy Secretary General Mr James Oteki said a number of its members hailing from distant regions were having difficulties reporting to work in time when schools open.

He said the teachers had registered a complaint with the branch, accusing school heads of intimidation whenever they reported late.

“We have received complaints from a number of members who hail from distant places. Some of them face transport crisis when schools open but are subjected to intimidation by school heads. We have written to school heads, TSC and education officer and we want them to be given an allowance of at least a week to report to school,” he said.

According to him, the policy will also allow TSC to pay hardship allowance funds in time for transport to help the teachers travel to their destinations within the first week.

“Some report late simply because of failing to raise fare to their destinations. We are poorly paid and the hardship and travelling allowances are sent late in the month. TSC understands the technical part of it and we want them to adopt the suggestion. We have also written to the national KNUT branch and we have a backing,” he added.

He said the one-week ultimatum will also allow the teachers put everything in order in their families before embarking in their duties.
