Residents of Ruaka in Limuru Sub-County have appealed to the national government to extend the street lighting project to the area.

The residents say that they are waiting for the lighting up of streets and markets in the area so that they can do business on a 24 hour basis.

The residents lauded the lighting projects being launched by the national government in several parts of the country, and urged the government to implement the same in the area.

The residents said the area will be able to achieve economic growth if a 24 hour system economy is implemented.

“We want to urge our President, Uhuru Kenyatta, to extend the street lighting project to Ruaka and the neighbouring towns so that we can conduct our businesses day and night,” said Joseph Wainaina.

Speaking to this writer on Sunday in Ruaka, the residents said that the area has the potential of transforming in terms of economic development.

The locals also lauded the move by the government to lower electricity tariffs noting that it has seen them get connected to electricity.

Joan Macharia, a business woman at Ruaka market said that lighting up the area will be a boost towards economic development.

She also intimated that street lighting will curb cases of crime and assure business people and residents of their security.

“For our town to grow and achieve full economic growth, we need street and market lighting so that traders and business owners can transact business on a 24 hour basis,” she said.

On Friday, President Kenyatta launched a Sh7.6 Billion street lighting project in Mombasa County.

In an event aired live on Television, the president said that such projects will be extended to all major towns across the 47 counties.

President Kenyatta promised Kenyans that every homestead in the country will be connected to electricity by 2022.

Among the counties that have already benefited from the street lighting project are Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, Kisii, Nyeri, Mombasa and Nairobi.
