Farmers in Chemelil have been urged to modernize banana farming to maximize the yields of the crop.
Dickson Ochieng from Maseno University department of Agriculture has said that many farmers from the area do not give much importance to banana production despite their being potential.
Ochieng was speaking to this writer on Tuesday afternoon in Chemelil during an exercise to educate farmers on improving banana farming.
"Banana's are known to be attacked by fungal diseases but many farmers ignore it, as they do not believe that banana farming can be modernized through many ways," said Ochieng.
Ochieng said that grafting is the only way farmers can maximize their returns when it comes to banana farming.
Ochieng said that grafting is the new form of growing banana's that promotes faster growth, improved yields and minimal risks of fungal diseases.
"A majority of farmers believe that grafting is an expensive affair, on the contrary, that is not the case.
The good thing with grafting is that you can plant one stem and use it for the next generations," added Ochieng.
Ochieng called on the government to provide farmers with information regarding the type of crop varieties to be used as a means of ensuring self-reliance.
