Farmers in the county are counting losses as the severe hot sun in January sets in leading to wilting of crops.

Michael Ocholla said his crops are wilting fast and fears if the conditions continue, he will lose a large percentage of his crops.

“My sukumawiki and beans have dried up and I am afraid I may not have a source of income this month. I depend on my crops for my family upkeep,” said Eunice Matisi from Lela.

"Milk production has decreased as my animals struggle to find grass to feed on.  I used to get 20-25 litres daily but now I can only mange between 12-15 litres, which is a big loss for me," said James Omondi from Maseno.

A number of crops have dried out due to the scorching sun with no hopes of persistent rains in the region.

Anne Syokimau, an agricultural officer has advised farmers to plant drought-resistant crops and tame losses.

“Farmers should plant crops such as cassavas, sorghum, onions, millet among others as they are able to survive the dry season,” said Syokimau.
