Farmers in Kisian have been urged to test soil before planting.

Martin Ogweno an agricultural officer from Kisumu county has said that poor soil are the reason why many farmers to do produce what they are expected to produce.

Speaking on Wednesday, Ogweno said that many farmers usually ignore the soil whenever they planting.

“The only concerns to farmers is weather the soil is fertile or not. They don't put into consideration the texture, acidic level of the soil and many other factors,” said Ogweno.

Ogweno said with soil testing farmers can determine which plants to plants to cultivate.

“When you determine what soil is made up, it becomes easier to know which plant will do better and when, rather than just planting without carrying out tests,” added Ogweno.

Ogweno said that many farmers do utilise field extensive officers who are out to assist in ensuring that they get maximum produce.

He took the opportunity to urge to visit laboratories and carry out tests on soil as the whole process is not expensive.

“Many farmers have a notion that soil testing is an expensive affair. I urge all farmers to visit government institution and get their soil tested. Sometimes it’s done for free,” said Ogweno.
