Anne Okoth an Agricultural officer from the Ministry of Agriculture Kisumu County has urged farmers to make use of the short January-February rains to improve on food security in the region.
She was speaking on Wednesday in Maseno after visiting farmers to enlighten them on how to make trenches.
She raised concern that most farmers are shying from using the short rains for fear of crop failure.
“The month of January should not mean no farming despite the scorching sun. The weather is promising and we expect short rains as this month of February sets in. Use the rains to plant drought resistant crops such as cassava, sorghum, millet among others,” said Okoth.
She added this will be far beneficial to them during the months of March and April as food will be selling well.
“The trenches will help conserve both the soil and hold on water for use by the crops.” She says.
