Speaking from his office on Thursday, Cheruiyot challenged farmers to take advantage of the Eldoret International Airport to export horticulture crops which will give them more money than maize and wheat.

"In this financial year, Uasin Gishu County government has set aside Sh30 million for the establishment of the horticulture business strategy in which we have identified seven crops in which we want farmers from the region to grow,” he said.

The crops include tissue culture banana, passion fruits, avocados, potatoes, local vegetables, green beans and sunflower.

Cheruiyot said there is a ready market for horticulture produce. He added that the ministry of agriculture will establish 33 fruit nurseries, one in each ward, to ensure farmers have a constant supply of certified fruit seeds.
