Farmers in Nakuru now want the county government to offer them compensation for floods that ruined their crops.
The farmers from Rhonda, Mwariki, Solai, Subukia and Bahati claim that the Sh500 m set aside by the county government should go towards ensuring that they got new seedlings and fertilisers.
The farmers pointed out that they had lost crops worth millions of shillings from the floods which swept away all their crops.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to salvage anything from the rains and the floods are still sweeping our area,” said Peter Mwangi, a farmer
They were speaking at a farmers meeting in Bahati area where they accused the county government of neglecting their plight.
According to the farmers, the county government had failed to mitigate proper strategies in dealing with the stormwater.
“They should even have issued farmers with water tanks and even proper irrigation tools to ensure that we were able to harvest the rain water and use it during the dry spell,” said Beatrice Muchiri
Muchiri said that she lost crops worth Sh500,000 in Solai as a result of the rains.
Andrew Njoroge said that the county should also distribute pesticides to farmers as the rains had also brought about various plant diseases
