Fears of cholera outbreak in Kiuu ward in Githurai 45 due to contamination of drinking water has calmed after a thorough clean up programme.
The exercise and sensitisation was carried out on Friday.
Led by Kenyatta University public health students, NGOs, county government of Kiambu and Kiuu ward rescue and disaster management team, the The activities included litter picking, unblocking of drainages, clean up of bridges and sewers and digging up new trenches for wastewater.
Area residents had expressed fears of cholera outbreak after the piped water they use got contaminated with sewage water.
"The water from pipes we use had a dark colour and a bad taste. It had the same smell as sewage water and people were getting sick," said Brenda Nyawira, a resident.
Aderg John, KU congressman school of public health, encouraged residents to contribute actively towards a better environment.
"You have to aim to create a healthy and pleasant environment for yourselves and visitors by properly disposing of non-degradable materials such as plastic, polythene and glass," said John.
The county government was also challenged to enhance service delivery.
"The county government should act swiftly but not wait until when the situation worsen," said Simon King'ara, CEO of Ng'ang'a King'ara Foundation.
