There are worries among Makongeni residents in Thika over the resurgence of second generation brews.
According to them, the number of drunks being spotted in the estate every morning is rising daily.
"The situation before the crackdown on illicit brews was mounted in July is slowly resuming in Makongeni. Youths are openly walking drunk without even fearing arrest,” Josephat Karanja, Section Two Nyumba Kumi chairman said on Monday.
Karanja blamed the local administration and the police for laxity.
"We have raised this matter with the chief, the assistant chiefs and even the Police but no substantial steps have been taken so far to curb the vice," he said.
Traders in Madaraka market can also confirm the resumption of the brews.
"It is no longer a secret that the illicit brews are back in circulation. The youths that we hire as porters are coming drunk as early as 7am but cannot reveal to you the source of the brews," Millicent Mukami, a potato trader said.
"I fired two a week ago when they came drunk and lied to me that it was alcohol from the previous day when I asked them about it," Dennis Muthii, another trader said.
Last week, Makongeni chief Daniel Waiguru warned brewers, suppliers and sellers of illicit brews to stop the vice or face the full force of the law.
