The renaming of New Nyali Road to Fidel Odinga Road has elicited mixes reactions among Mombasa residents, with some questioning the relevance of renaming the road after Raila Odinga's son.
On Wednesday, Cord leader Raila Odinga together with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho witnessed the renaming of the road in Nyali, and another road in Old Town in honour of Professor Ali Mazrui.
Mombasa residents have raised concerns over the move to rename the road tin honour of the Late Fidel Odinga, who according to some, has not contributed anything to the country.
"Why should they name a road after Fidel Odinga? As far as I am concerned, roads are named after people who have contributed to the country in some way," said Joseph Kalu.
Others were of the opinion that there were so many important people who could have been named after the road.
"If it is a matter of renaming the road after somebody from upcountry, they would have renamed it after so many renowned patriots who are not necessarily not from the Coast," said Paul Kioko.
Despite facing a lot of criticism, a section of residents welcomed the move saying it was ok for the road to be named after the former prime minister's son.
"Why don't they have a problem with Mama Ngina drive! Wasn't that named after the former first president's wife?" asked George Rabongo.
