Nyamira residents have been urged to work closely with the local administration and the police to combat incidents of insecurity in the region.

Speaking at Kebirigo market in West Mugirango constituency on Thursday, county commissioner Josephine Onunga urged local residents to cooperate with the administration to fight insecurity.

She defended the government of alleged laxity in dealing with reported incidents of insecurity in the county and asked residents to take insecurity as a national problem instead of viewing it as a solely obligation of the national government.

“Security should be a matter of concern for all, not necessarily the government. You have to work with the government so that we can decisively deal with insecurity by apprehending those responsible. It will be unfair if you fail to execute your obligation as citizens and leave everything to the government,” she said.

She promised deployment more security officers in area trading centers in the region to beef up patrols as an urgent measure of combating increased crimes targeting business entities in the region.

“I have already ordered regional police commandant to deploy more officers to all trading centers in the region. That will be crucial because trading centers have been a target in in past,” she said.

Onunga also reiterated the commitment of the government to support the Nyumba Kumi initiative which she said had partly achieved its objectives.

“As ordinary people, you have to embrace the Nyumba Kumi. It has worked well and I think if you take it seriously, we will see more impact in terms of reduced crimes,” she added.
