Five KDF officers have been arrested for allegedly pretending to be Kiambu County liquor enforcement officers in Ruiru and Githurai areas.

Ruiru police boss Isaac Thuranira said the suspects are being held at the station and that three other people escaped during the operation, conducted after a tip-off from members of the public.

Thuranira accused the suspects of taking advantage the ignorance of bar owners in the area of not being able to verify the identity of anti-illicit brew officers. Some of the operators later reported the matter to the local police officers.

The three suspects who escaped made away with at least Sh100,000 from members of the public, collected at different joints, the police boss said.

He revealed that other incidences of impersonation have been reported in the area, and that police officers were looking into the matter.

Police officers have been conducting inspections at alcohol-bringing areas to ensure compliance with the law, ever since President Uhuru Kenyatta launched a nationwide operation to get rid of illicit brews.
